Am I God’s child?
I had the privilege to minister the Word of God to a group of older persons once a week for over 5 years. One day one of them, a 95 year old Dutch lady asked me this question: “I grew up in the church. We were taught to read our Bibles every day. I still do that. But how can I be sure that I am God’s child?” What follows here was the answer I gave her.
“Do you believe God exists?” Yes, she replied.
Hebrews 11:6 “And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.” (ESV)
“Have you sinned in your life?” Yes, she replied.
Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” (ESV)
"Do you believe that your sin would cause you to be separated from God, after your death, unless you accept the free gift of salvation through Jesus’ death on the cross?" Yes, she replied.
Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (ESV)
"Do you believe God sent His Son Jesus to save you?” Yes, she replied.
John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal” (ESV)
Romans 5:8 “but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (ESV)
1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (ESV)
“Are you able to confess out loud that Jesus is the Lord of your life?” Yes, she replied.
"And do you believe in your heart that God has raised Jesus from the dead, and that He lives forever?" Yes, she replied.
Romans 10:9 “because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” (ESV)
“Then, Aunt Baby [ficticious name], I assure you, that you can be sure that you are God’s child!”
John 1:12 ‘But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,” (ESV)
2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” (ESV)
Question to you: “Are you sure that you are a child of God?”
If not, you have read through this article this far, and you now know how. Won’t you please make sure about your eternity with God? Reach out to me, if you have questions, or if you have just made that decision.
“Aunt Baby” has since passed on to be with God. I will never forget this conversation! Another of her profound comments was:
“We never learnt about the Holy Spirit in our church. You introduced Him to me. And it looks to me as if He does all the work.”
Indeed, the Holy Spirit does all God’s work in our hearts. Won’t you invite Him into yours?
